Welcome to Senoia! Senoia (pronounced “Se-noy-uh” is a small city in Coweta County, Georgia with an estimated population of 2,719 residents (2005). Senoia is the second largest city in Coweta County. Here you are sure to find a variety of fun, recreational activities to keep you occupied.

Senoia History

Around 1828 many residents of Newberry, South Carolina packed up and moved to the countryside in the hopes of making a fresh start. Attracted to the rich farm land of Senoia, they traveled by covered wagon, ox cart, and on horseback to settle here and raise cotton, corn, and livestock. The city of Senoia was established in 1860 when Reverend Francis Warren Baggarly bought the land where the town of Senoia now sits. The first building constructed (after the post office that officially established the city) was called the Rock House and was meant to be used for mercantile purposes, but was later used as a commissary for Confederate soldiers. The first church was Methodist Episcopal with Revered Baggarly as the minister. The first high school was opened in 1865, which was a huge accomplishment for a rural, southern town at the end of the Civil War.

After the war the town’s railroads (Savannah, Griffin, and North Alabama Railroad) were completed allowing agricultural products to be shipped by rail from Senoia. The town was officially incorporated in 1866 and the residents submitted a bid to have the county seat moved there in 1876, which was unsuccessful. Most of the town is a historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and cannot be disturbed. Although the town has a rich history and culture that can be traced back to the 1800s the origins of the town’s name remains a mystery.
